»But Robots Have No Heart!« On the Literary Presentation of Machine People in Current Books for Beginning Readers

Abstract

This contribution intends to specifically investigate various functional dimensions of the literary robot motif in current German literature for beginning young readers. With regard to the issue of human-machine relations obviously “humanoid robots” continuously fascinate and are still a highly favored subject. The aim of the paper is to present the surprising diversity of literary constructions of human-robot relationships in first reading literature. A final outlook briefly discusses current novels for children with reading experience.

Nadine Jessica Schmidt, University of Siegen

Nadine Jessica Schmidt, born 1982, is a research assistant in the field of didactics of literature at the University of Siegen. She received her PhD in 2013 with a dissertation topic on the "Construction of Authenticity in Autobiographical Narrative Texts." Her current research interests are in the areas of: Children's and young adult literature (especially first reading literature), literary socialization, and literary learning.
