Abstract

For her sixth birthday in April 1939 Julia gets a doll called Emma. She is twice as old when she loses her fleeing the Soviet-occupied zone. During the troubled times of World War II, including air raids and several relocations, Julia is accompanied by Emma. The loss of her beloved doll marks the end of Julia’s childhood.

Author Biography

Magali Nieradka-Steiner, University of Heidelberg

Studied German and Romance languages and literature in Heidelberg. 2005-2009 Lecturer of the DAAD in Nice (France). 2009 PhD in Heidelberg on Sanary-sur-Mer as a place of literary exile. Academic assistant for French at the at Heidelberg University and lecturer in literary studies at the University of Mannheim. Guest lectureships and research stays in Los Angeles (USA) Angeles (USA), Prague (Czech Republic), Shah Alam (Malaysia) and Tomsk (Russia). Author of numerous monographs and essays on exile, Franco-German topics and on the cultural history of toys. Habilitation on the Literary History of the Doll (in preparation).
