Abstract

Shapies are miniature statues of oneself, other humans or (domestic) animals from a 3D printer, based on a high-resolution body scan. In contrast to selfies, shapies have not yet experienced mass media distribution, so that the (scientific) literature on this phenomenon is very sparse. Therefore, we would like to make a first proposal for the interpretation of the shapies with our essay. This interpretation is furthermore guided by the following statement of a Shapie buyer: ‘To hold one's own ego in the hands as a lifelike miniature model - is fascinating’. In this article we focus three perspectives expressed in the cited statement: (1) Shapies as lifelike miniature models of the own Ego; (2) holding in our hands the own Ego and (3) the fascination of shapies.
